Safety in primary care medicines management: a system performance

You are here: Home » Safety in primary care medicines management: a system performance

Denham Phipps, The University of Manchester

In the United Kingdom, the primary healthcare sector oversees the majority of prescribing and dispensing of medicines, and does so in the face of variable service demands. Its work is the product of interactions between people (healthcare professionals, support staff, service users and carers) and artefacts, both within and across different organisations. For these reasons, primary care medicines management can be seen as a matter of maintaining performance in a complex work system.

In this presentation, we will describe a series of studies that use concepts from human factors in systems to understand and address medication safety in primary care.
